Calderon on public insecurity

Mexican President Felipe Calderón spoke Sunday with the organizers of a march protesting the violence occuring daily throughout the country. We know that Mexico's greatest problem is public insecurity; this is in consequence of the gradual and growing disintegration of public and governmental institutions, he said. Calderón also mentioned a deterioration in the fabric of society, including a lack of values that creates a vulnerability to organized crime: We know that without a stronger society, there is no amount of police effort that can truly defend us from crime. Changes to police recruiting, arming, and oversight were promised during the speech. A transcription of the speech is available (http://www.presidencia.gob.mx/prensa/presidencia/?contenido=38270) (in spanish).

Support wanes for Mexican military

According to an AP article (http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5j6D4iB1npYkxvlxMtoWINtoncliwD92524VO6), a $400 million US aid package to fight the Mexican drug cartels may be funding military corruption: People in cities on the front lines of Mexico's battle against trafficking say they are increasingly frustrated with military tactics — a shift in opinion that threatens to undermine Calderon's nationwide crackdown.Mexico's National Human Rights Commission says it has documented more than 600 cases of abuse since Calderon sent 20,000 soldiers across the nation to take back territory controlled by drug lords.

Drug Shooting in Pheonix

Mexican drug cartels are now terrorizing neighborhoods in the United States, according to a WND article (http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view pageId=67963): Six men in police tactical clothing are suspected of shooting a man to death, firing more than 100 rounds into his Pheonix home in what some are calling a Mexican drug cartel hit performed by members of the active Mexican Army. Three of the men were arrested; they were apparently planning to ambush police, but ran out of ammunition.
