2 Hours of Combat in Michoacán

Mexican soldiers battled a group of armed men, apparently drug traffickers, in Michoacán during a two hour period yesterday, as reported by La Crónica de Hoy. Four of the armed men were killed during the shootout, and three soldiers were wounded.

Over 900 people have been killed as a result of drug related violence in Mexico so far this year.

This article discusses the situation in Baja California in which residents of three municipalities are being stripped of their homes and property. This involves a conflict among Mexican citizens. American buyers of Baja California property are not touched upon, as they will be discussed in a future article. This is one of the specific issues of focus for the International Border Solutions Task Force.

Pemex Investigation

A current investigation into former executives of Pemex, the government owned oil company in Mexico, provides us with further insight into the corruption in modern day society. The individuals being investigated allegedly diverted more than 150 million dollars of the company's funds.

This is not a unique case, unfortunately. In 2000, 160 million dollars was diverted into the PRI presidential campaign in what Mexican media dubbed "Pemexgate."
