You may have noticed that we're in the process of changing the site's name to "Binational Border Solutions Task Force." Members of the organization thought the name change appropriate in order to make it clear that our main focus is on U.S.-Mexico relations. The site has thus been moved to www.bbstf.org, but the old domain, www.ibstf.org, will continue to work for the forseeable future. Please update any bookmarks accordingly, and thank you for visiting. |

Twenty-two people were killed in Sonora yesterday in what was the bloodiest day in recent years in the fight against drug cartels. Fifteen traffickers were left dead, as well as five police officers and two civilians. Two other officers were found beaten and left for dead. The fifteen killed were part of a group of armed men numbering about forty-five or fifty whom the police were battling in Cananea. The confrontation took place when seven police officers and two civilians were taken hostage Wednesday morning. State police were sent in shortly thereafter. |

Yesterday Artemio Mejía Chávez, police chief in Chilpancingo, Guerrero, was murdered by a group of armed men in fake Federal Investigation Agency uniforms. The group of 15 men armed with AR-15 and AK-47 rifles established themselves about 300 meters from the police chief's house. The chief, known by the nickname "Commander Cobra," came by to see what was going on, and as he was returning to his vehicle he was shot. Those accompanying the police chief engaged in a gunfight with the armed men. One of the men was killed, and another wounded, and a police officer and a civilian were also wounded. |
